Alcohol and Substance Abuse

Alcohol and Substance Abuse

Although at times it may seem harmless, the abuse of alcohol and drugs can lead to serious issues. Currently, more than 20 million Americans over the age of 12 struggle with addiction. As a trusted counselor in Hermosa Beach, CA, I frequently work with clients who struggle with alcohol and/or substance abuse. If an individual’s abuse issues are left untreated, it can develop into alcoholism or a drug dependence. It can often be very difficult to overcome these struggles alone. If you believe that you or a loved one is suffering from any form of substance abuse, please contact me today so that together we can begin addressing these issues.

What Defines Alcohol and Substance Abuse?

While drinking alcohol itself is not necessarily a problem, drinking too much can lead to more serious issues. Although the initial use of abusive substances is typically voluntary, frequent use and genetics can lead to addiction. Alcohol and drug addiction is a chronic disease distinguished by an individual’s compulsive or uncontrollable behavior to seek and use harmful substances. It affects both the brain and behavior, and as a result can become a relapsing disease. Eventually, alcohol and substance abuse can lead to other problems such as anxiety and depression, as well as strain or harm interpersonal relationships.

Treating Alcohol and Substance Abuse

Alcohol and substance abuse can be treated; but it can be a difficult and sometimes long-term process. Before any treatment can be rendered, clients must stop taking abusive substances, and in some more severe cases medically assisted detoxification may be necessary. Counseling, family therapy, and other behavioral therapies are typically the main form of treatment for alcohol or substance abuse. When combined with therapy or counseling, medications can play an important role in treatment as well. Often times there are many other underlying issues that need to be addressed while treating a client. Evaluations and treatments for mental health issues such as depression or anxiety are important to look into as well.

No single treatment is right for everyone, which is why I encourage individuals to seek help of a professional counselor or visit one of our counselors in Hermosa Beach, CA.
