For those who are still searching for a new years resolution, or for those who are not necessarily great at making or keeping them, we came across an interesting article by Business Insider that discusses 9 things successful people do right before bed that can get your 2016 jumpstarted. Business Insider claims that “the very last thing you do before bed tends to have a significant impact on your mood and energy level the next day, as it often determines how well and how much you sleep.” How much sleep you get can have a huge impact on your mental, emotional, and physical health. If you lack proper recharging time, the tasks and activities you need to perform the following day can suffer.
According to Business Insider, successful people do the following things right before bed:
As a teen, young adult, adult, and couples therapist in Hermosa Beach, I know the importance of sleep for people of all ages. There are plenty of obstacles and stressors that can keep people in every age group, life status, and financial situation awake at night. In my work with clients and in my own life, I have found that doing tasks and activities before bed that get your mind off of the things that are weighing you down can help you sleep better. With more sleep, you are better equipped to face the next day and the stressors that may come your way.
Out of the list above, one of the most effective things you can do is to visualize tomorrow’s success. Visualization is a tool I use with my clients to help them vividly picture their goals and aspirations. By visualizing what you want in life, it helps your brain figure out a path towards achieving it. You will have an easier time identifying the resources you need and finding the inner motivation to reach for your goals. Visualizing an outcome promotes positive thinking around that outcome and encourages you to stay on the path towards success. In order to visualize effectively, you will need to not only focus on the end picture but also on the details, such as your senses. Think of how you will feel when you reach your goal or when you achieve what you aspired for. Consider what you will see and hear in that moment. For example, if you are visualizing buying a new home, think about what the front yard will look like, what kind of street you will live on, the sound of the birds chirping in the trees, and the feel of the sunlight seeping into your living room. By visualizing these details tonight, you are better prepared to achieve your goals tomorrow.
