Overcoming Anxiety About Public Speaking

Did you know that fear of public speaking is one of the most commonly experienced fears? Many, many people would rather do anything than stand in front of a crowd to give a speech. As your Hermosa Beach therapist, I want to help you work through these fears so that you can overcome your anxiety and feel comfortable any time you have to speak in front of a group of people. Here are a few tips to keep in mind.

Practice & Prepare

The biggest step you can take toward overcoming your fear of public speaking is to simply do it as often as possible. The more you speak, the more confident you will feel as you get used to the activity. Start small. Prepare some notes, and start by giving your speech while you look in a mirror. Try this a few times, and when you’re ready, ask a few friends or family members if you can practice in front of them. Preparation is huge, so also be sure that you know your topic backward and forward. If you feel confident and knowledgeable, your nervousness will ease.

Don’t Memorize

Memorizing your speech may seem like a good idea, but this can make you sound robotic and monotone. It can also cause more anxiety if your mind goes blank. Forgetting what you were saying is the last thing you want. So don’t memorize. Instead, just remember key points of your material and talk around those points.

Remember to Breathe

Before you step up to the microphone or stand in front of your audience, spend five minutes breathing deeply and visualizing a great experience. Picture yourself giving the best speech of your life and engaging with your audience. Think positively!
